Virginia and Bud Allen, Pat Strang and Trudy Leishman participated in the 4th annual Douglas Day Parade.  Led by the sound of bagpipers of the Langley Legion Pipe Band the non-motorized parade worked it's way through the village of Fort Langley.  The 1858 style parade consisted of unique horse and donkey drawn carriages, wagons, costumed riders, pioneers, penny farthing cycles, dancers, pipers, fiddlers and finishing with a vintage Mr. S. Claus.  The heavy rains that had been hammering the west coast for days eased off moments before the start of the parade.  The donkeys loved all the excitement and took a real shine to the bagpipes.  Maybe they have some Scottish heritage that we don't know about!  It was a great day and lots of fun.

  Agassiz Fall Fair
September 19, 2009

Many members of the First Mainland Donkey & Mule Club participated in the Agassiz parade and Fall Fair.  Audrey MacDonald, took over the reins for Trudy and drove Sarah in the parade, transporting the Corn King to the fairgrounds.  Helen Howell driving Guido carried the President of the Agassiz Fair.  Catherine Olson rode her mule Festus and her two sons followed behind dressed in donkey hats scooping manure.  The crowds roared when it started to rain and the Corn King put up a “donkey umbrella”   that Trudy had brought for him.
At the fairgrounds we were stalled outside under a big tent in the “kids zone”.  We had 6 donkeys, a mule and a small promotional table with brochures for the public to enjoy.  Margaret & Marcel brought three of their donkeys which was their very first public appearance.  They were on there best behaviour and loved all the extra attention.  During a “donkey talk” moment it was discovered that Guido, Helen's donkey, is the father of Margaret's donkey Sydney and either Sweetie or Roxie is the mother.  Therefore Andy and Bart are half brothers to Guido and Pepper is a half or full sister.
We also held a donkey demo which was very well received by the crowds of people that came and watched.  The donkeys were very popular and we are looking forward to participating again next year. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen after numerous set-backs and a special thanks to Trudy who when she should have been resting spent many hours helping make it all come together.
